Games you have double dipped on

Cassie

Or triple, or more…

What games have you bought multiple times, whether it was to get a special edition or get it on an additional platform? Was it intentional, or did you forget you already owned it?

The first that comes to mind for me is Final Fantasy X. I originally had it as a kid, having recognized Tidus from Kingdom Hearts. My siblings and I didn’t make it far, and eventually my step-brother lost it. So we got a new copy and still didn’t make much progress.

Jump forward into my early teens, and I want to give it another shot. I dusted off that old copy, started a new game, and made it all the way to the Seymour Flux battle on Mt. Gagazet. I got stuck there and dropped it again.

Then the PS3 remaster was announced, and I thought to myself, this is perfect! I’m older and wiser now, and I can finally finish the game! I bought it again, started fresh, and fell off of it after a while (I think around the Calm Lands). Then the PS4 remaster was announced.

Reader, I bought it again.

Luckily, you could port your saves between the two, so I did that and finally finished the game.

Outside of Kingdom Hearts rereleases, I’ve triple dipped on Bastion from Supergiant Games, and double dipped on Child of Light & Transistor.

Bastion and Transistor I originally had on Steam in 2014. I downloaded Bastion onto my iPad (it was on sale for like $2 in 2015, how could I not), and bought it for the third time on my PS4 along with Transistor (as both were on sale – this is a theme, lol). I greatly enjoy both games, and all my playthroughts have been a pleasure to revisit.

Similarly with Child of Light, I got it on PS3 when it first released, and later bought it on PS4 on sale (and 100&'d it both times).

It still hasn’t happened yet, but if there’s ever a Mass Effect remaster for current-gen/next-gen, I would absolutely double dip without hesitation.

nicknames

Quite a few. Especially when you factor in the Remasters that have been sort of proliferating the industry at the end of last gen/beginning of this current one.

Kingdom Hearts: PS2, Final Mix, 1.5
Chain of Memories: GBA, Final Mix, PS2, 1.5 (Technically a fully remake from the GBA version and originally it came with KH2 Final Mix as a free pack in)
Kingdom Hearts II: PS2, Final Mix, 2.5
Birth by Sleep: PSP, 2.5
Shadow of the Colossus: PS2, PS3, PS4
Final Fantasy X: PS2, PS3
Final Fantasy X-2: PS2, PS3
Final Fantasy XII: PS2, PS4
Jak and Daxter: PS2, PS3
Jak 2: PS2, PS3
Jak 3: PS2, PS3
Undertale: PC, PS4
Super Meat Boy: PC, PS4
Skullgirls: PS3, PS4 (Got a physical copy courtesy of Limited Run Games)
There are other games as well that I have across multiple platforms but I wouldn’t really count it under double dipping as I got them for free in some form or another (like Control, Bastion, FFXIV, and VVVVVV to name a few.)

I’ve been tempted to double dip on a few indies games that I’ve really enjoyed like Oxenfree , Nex Machina and most recently Sayonara Wild Hearts via buying a physical copy but haven’t really made the jump on just buying physical copies for the sake of having a copy. Still seems wasteful to do so.

I’ve bought (and actively play) Stardew Valley on both PC and Switch. This one is a little more understandable because of the portability of the Switch vs my PC. I wish sometimes there was a way to sync my saves between the two. Updates come out slightly quicker on PC than on Switch, but Switch is like… the biggest platform for the game, so Concerned_Ape does seem to prioritize it.

Across the two, I think I have something like 200 hours clocked.
