sorry for not getting to these over the last month! things have been pretty dreadful with the usual quarantine malaise coupled with ongoing struggles with police brutality.

The fact that we’re not even halfway through the year yet, and still have the election coming up, is frankly absurd after how this year has been going.

the vibe this week is that everyone is super fucking overwhelmed

My life has been not super notable these past few weeks. I’ve had some ups and downs of depression lately (I am OK), which is not a surprise given the state of the world. My workload for grad school has dropped off now that the spring semester is over. I’m taking two summer courses, but they don’t run concurrently and while the pace is quick for the classes (cramming a semester into five weeks), they’re fairly low maintenance. I’m getting ready for my camp to start up in July, too, which is a fair amount of prep. I also visited my the school where I’ll be teaching and met with the principal about a few things. It’s exciting to think about setting up my classroom, but there’s a big pall over the whole thing where I don’t know if kids will actually be in it come September. It’s hard.

I’ve been thinking about and investigating any literature I want to introduce to the curriculum. I did pick up all the literature currently used the other day and now have a bucket of books to read through and identify any blind spots. I read Monster by Walter Dean Myers in the last few days as a potential candidate. There’s currently a short story of his in the curriculum, but Monster was powerful and I’d consider bringing it in.

For me, the past two weeks have been filled with emotional highs and lows. Today specifically was a day where I said I didn’t wanna get out of bed. I’m not necessarily depressed, but I feel I just needed to lay down as much as I can today.

I’ve been working on a movie blog as well. Lately, I tried a more laid back format when I wrote about Takeshi Mike’s Audition. It was more writing about my emotional experience watching it and I am really proud about how it turned out.

I’ve also been reading a lot more. Because of all that’s going on, I cant even leave my house, so I’ve found some good e-books to read. So far I’ve completed Stephen King books, 11/22/63 and The Shining, The Hate U Give, and I’m currently working on The Dark Decent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. I try to read at least 45min a day, so it works as a daily goal.

Things with me have been pretty well capsulated in my above reply, lol. Self-care wise, I’ve been trying to write more regularly, and slowly making my way through some literature about prison abolition. Right now, I’m reading a guidebook that’s explaining the prison abolition movement as a whole and ideas towards that that various people & communities have tried/come up with, and I’m looking to start Angela Davis’s Are Prisons Obsolete? within the next week or two.

Been considering potentially doing some video game streams once a week as well. I streamed a bit earlier this week and it was real fun, so definitely would be into continuing it – especially since I got the giant bundle of games from itch.io as part of their Racial Justice & Equality fundraiser.
